Do I need a seller’s permit?
If you are a California-based business and plan to print books in order to sell them, it’s important that you obtain a state seller’s permit. A seller’s permit is a state license that allows you to purchase books without paying sales tax, and to collect and report sales tax when you sell the book. Without a seller’s license, you will be subject to sales tax from the printer.

However, according to the California State Board of Equalization, “you are not required to hold a seller’s permit if all your sales are made exclusively in interstate or foreign commerce, and you make no sales in this state.”

How long does it take to print?
Printing time varies for each project, depending on the print run (number of books printed) and the season. After proofs have been received and approved, allow approximately 4 weeks for books printed in the U.S., and approximately 8 weeks for books printed overseas. Please allow an extra week for books printed in November or December.

How long does it take to receive print book proofs?
It takes approximately 3-7 business days for your print-ready file to be reviewed by the printer and shipped. Although you can opt for a PDF proof, we always suggest ordering a printed proof. Printed proofs range from $30 to $100 depending on the page count.

Is there a size limitation for my book?
We can accommodate any size book, but it is best to consult with Chelsea Print & Publishing for a price quote before deciding on the size. We often suggest slightly different sizes in order to cut the most books out of the least paper.

Please note that clients looking to print less than 750 books will find it most economical to print their book with a maximum width of 12 inches. Short-run books are printed in the United States using digital printers fed with strict paper dimensions.

Are there any restrictions to our page counts?
Books are printed in sets of four pages, so your page count should be divisible by four.

Different binding options have varied minimum and maximum page counts. When you approach us with your project, we will suggest an optimal binding.

What do you need to start working on my book design?

  • If you have images prepared, please ensure they are 300 dpi.
  • Unless you plan to hire Chelsea Print & Publishing to manage the editing or book writing, we will not be responsible for ensuring your book is free of grammatical, spelling or factual errors. Text files should be sent in final format in a Word document. Our design quotes include 3 rounds of optional text revisions, and we charge an hourly fee for each additional text revision.

Will Chelsea Print & Publishing handle the distribution, warehousing or marketing of my publication?
Currently we focus all of our efforts on the highest quality book production management, and do not have the in-house capacity for marketing, distribution or warehousing.
